This fictional tale of the Harper family told by eldest son Conrad begins as Conrad is being born on a stormy Texas night in the early '50s. We meet Conrad's young mom-to-be in misery while his young military dad-to-be and military doc bond, both three sheets to the wind.

The Harper family roller coaster careens on into the '60s and beyond, sometimes humorously, sometimes not. Conrad finally grows into every teen's dream of freedom before his world darkens and his family unravels along with the country's social fabric. And of course Conrad will have many more adventures next time.

Conrad Harper relates most of this fictional memoir on the ups and downs of a family with an alcoholic father and a mother who cares only for appearances.. Conrad's late teen years cover aspects of the tumultuous 1960s (Vietnam yes, integration no) which after a point I found repetitious and uninteresting (How many bad trips can you take before it clicks that drugs are not for you?) As far as other characters are concerned, Barb, Conrad's mother is the most interesting one, seeking ways to tie down her brain so that she doesn't have to notice her family. The dollhouse is tremendous! The other players are cookie-cutter.
The book is well-written and the first part is five star.

This one took me back. A quick read but the ending was abrupt, would have liked something to bring the book to completion.
The book was amazing, the sixties are a fascinating time and I was
awed and mesmerized by the novel. Conrad and the Harper family
are so real and engaging, the author sure knows what he is doing.
Spellbinding, fascinating, incredible. I recommend this novel
to all, the author has a rare talent. It will take you for a ride
through a forgotten time in the past when being alive really meant
something, when freedom and love were bursting from people
like neon rainbows. It was the sixties, the magical time when
young people stood united and free. Pain, freedom, redemption,
the spark of first love and romance. The thrill of the music
that engulfed the decade and really meant something to people.
Awesome novel.

I was referred this book by a friend and I love it. A really good read and easy to follow.
Great story line, very interesting read. Would recommend this author and look forward to reading him again. Thanks for an incredible journey.
This is a fast and very interesting read! The story is seamless and the characters are well constructed. The author really captured the feel of growing up in the 1960s. There were parts of the book that just made me laugh out loud. The family's dysfunction was realistically drawn. This is the author's first book, and what a debut it is! I recommend it! It is very entertaining.
As someone of similar circumstances, though not the dysfunctional family, the book touched me deeply and thoroughly. Parts could have been biographical. Coincidence? I doubt that, it is simply an excellent and creative record of the society and times of late Baby Boomers. A fine job.
Conrad's fascinating narrative makes this story seem much more like memoir than fiction. He lives, breathes, and explores his youth in vivid detail through the tumultuous 60's. Each chapter reads like a short story illuminating another facet of a teen trying to make sense of his imploding family and his liberation from it. That he escapes relatively unscathed makes me hopeful that we will hear from him again. His wild ride seems far from over.

I've added Kevin Kelly to my list of favorite writers. He obviously inherited and honed the infamous Irish story-telling gene and love of language.
